Crisis Management

Crisis situations are generally characterized after the fact as either successes or failures and rarely anything in between.  Crises may be powerfully recalled, generations after the fact, by single catch phrases, each pregnant with its own good or bad connotations:  “The Cuban Missile Crisis”; “Three Mile Island”; “Apollo 13”; the “Munich Olympic Games”; “9/11”; or the “European Monetary Crisis”.

Ultimately, every crisis situation—large or small—is about people: those people affected by it, those working to solve its problems, and those watching it unfold.  Likewise, crisis management is really about managing people and their combined efforts to achieve desired outcomes from an unexpected or undesirable situation.

In today’s sound-bite society, the perceived mismanagement of a crisis situation by an organization can eclipse the crisis itself in the collective memory of participants and the public.  Crisis managers will either get a passing score, or they won’t, typically from a very unforgiving constituency of stakeholders.

We believe that crisis management should be conceptualized as a process (supported by team structures, protocols, training, and leadership) by which an organization goes about solving acute problems and finding effective solutions to unanticipated events at high speed and with high accuracy.

Preparing leaders and managers for the eventual crisis is thus a wise and sound investment by an organization in itself.  Eagle’s crisis management program focuses on the principles and foundations of effective crisis management.  These are applicable to all manner of government agencies, law enforcement and public safety organizations, non-profits, and private companies.  Eagle’s crisis management services include:

  • Assessment Services: Eagle can provide an independent and comprehensive analysis of an organization’s preparedness to manage crisis situations, along with recommendations for improvement.
  • Crisis Management Planning: Eagle assists clients in developing a tailored crisis management architecture including plans, policies, procedures, protocols, and organizational structures (crisis teams).
  • Training and Exercises:  Eagle strongly advocates a continuous improvement cycle of training and exercises for its clients.  Our two-day Crisis Management Seminar (maybe a link to our course catalog here) provides managers and leaders with the principles and foundations of crisis management at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels.  This initial seminar ensures a common understanding of the processes involved and thus becomes the point of departure for a multi-year exercise program that validates the organization’s plans, policies, agreements, and procedures; clarifies crisis roles and responsibilities; and identifies resource and training gaps.
  • Consultation:  Eagle’s experienced subject matter experts can provide clients with consultation, advice, and assistance during actual crisis events.
